California LPCC / LMFT Supervisor Training

Foundations of Clinical Supervision – 15 CE Hours

This 15-hour, fully asynchronous continuing education course is designed for licensed mental health professionals who plan to supervise APCCs, AMFTs, or Associates in California and need to complete the required supervisor training hours established by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences (BBS).

The course focuses exclusively on the foundational competencies of clinical supervision, including supervision theory, developmental models, ethical and legal responsibilities specific to supervision, culturally responsive supervision practices, evaluation and remediation, and technology-assisted supervision.

The course is delivered 100% online and self-paced, allowing participants to complete the training on their own schedule.

Completion of this course satisfies the 15-hour supervision training requirement for new supervisors under California law. This course does not grant supervisor status. Participants must independently meet all licensure, experience, and documentation requirements set by the California BBS.

Course Structure

The Foundations of Clinical Supervision includes four core modules:

  • Theories of Counseling, Marriage and Family Therapy, and Supervision

  • Developmental Models of Supervision and ACES Best Practices

  • Ethics of the Supervisory Relationship and Multiculturally Competent Evaluation and Remediation

  • Ethical and Legal Issues in Supervision, Including Technology and Professional Best Practices

Instruction is delivered through recorded lectures, readings, and brief knowledge-check quizzes to reinforce learning.

Important Notes

  • This course meets California’s supervisor training content requirements but does not itself approve or designate supervisors

  • Supervisors must separately complete required agreements, self-assessments, and ongoing professional development as required by the BBS

  • No live sessions, orientation modules, or written reflection assignments are required
